Senior Electrical Estimator (Construction)
O'Connor Electric LtdJob Description
Construction Estimators take drawings and specifications created by Engineers and develop detailed cost estimates which they then use to competitively bid on construction projects. I would consider this career a mix of Construction (Knowledge), Accounting, Law and Sales/Marketing. Estimating is a rollercoaster of skills and emotions which range from quiet mathematical calculations to high pressure board room tables.

Career Story
After high school I went into construction at a site level, which was more out of necessity than previous ambitions. I continued working in the field for around 7 years, working for a few different companies and growing to a level of Foreman. In that role with the employer I was working for, I was spending 4-6 months a year living in hotel rooms and working all around Ontario. When my wife and I decided to start a family, I realized I no longer wanted to do the travelling, even though I still had experience and a passion for construction. At this point, I went back to College part time and completed the Construction Estimator Certificate Program. From there I went on to start at O'Connor Electric as a Junior Estimator, I continued working there for another 7 years increasing my knowledge base and experience. At this point I explored a few other Electrical Contractors and tried out other roles such as Project Management, Purchasing and Coordinating. I returned to O'Connor in 2019 to lead the estimating department for one of the largest Electrical Contractors in Ontario.
