Family & Community Worker - Groups Facilitator, Special Services Team
Family and Children's Services of Waterloo RegionJob Description
My role allows me to connect with organizations, families and youth in the community. I get to meet people and help support them in any areas they would like some help in. My job is called "coaching" because it is similar to what a coach does--someone whom helps people practice so they feel better at things and is there for them when they need help.
I also get to run programs and groups throughout the Region. I visit community centres and offer programs for all age groups--from babies up to adults/parents!

Career Story
When I was in high school, I wasn't sure what I wanted to be when I grew up. I thought about becoming a lawyer and my dad thought I would be a good teacher!
My Guidance Counsellor knew I enjoyed helping others and working with children/youth. He suggested I take an arts program at university!
While there, I realized there were definitely areas I was not very good at...and there were other courses that I loved and it came really easy for me! I was leaning towards the social work field...but I also took some other courses that I still found interesting, in other areas!
I was very lucky that a mentor of mine, highly recommended that volunteering would help me a lot. I gained valuable experiences in different areas, made connections and contacts, learned about resources in the community and found career areas that I really enjoyed!
Out of these volunteer experiences, I was very lucky one of them turned into a job for me!
As a new worker entering the workforce, I had several part-time jobs that I worked at the same time. This provided me with valuable experiences and connections.
Eventually, I secured a full-time job at Family & Children's Services of the Waterloo Region (this came out of my part-time job). I have been with this agency for 23 years!
