Career Story
I began my healthcare career in 2008 as a part time Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (MDRT) at Brantford General Hospital (BGH). Prior to working in healthcare I was working in Retail Management and had held other private sector jobs. In my role of MDRT I learned all aspects of the role and the important part the MDRD plays in the overall function of a hospital. I was selected to participate in the organizations Emerging Leaders program as well as other development opportunities. In April 2013 I was the successful candidate for the Supervisor position. I worked in the BGH MDR Supervisor role until 2015 when I joined Trillium Health Partners (THP) as Queensway Site Supervisor to help transition MDR back to the organization as it had been outsourced. I helped rebuild MDR across 3 hospital sites within THP (Mississauga Hospital, Credit Valley Hospital, Queensway Health Centre). After 6 months in my role as Supervisor I was promoted to Educator for the reprocessing program. In 2016 I was asked to consider applying for the MDR Manager position available at Grand River Hospital (GRH). Being as I was commuting from Waterloo Region to Mississauga this role was a fit for home/work life balance. I was the successful candidate and started at GRH in 2016. I have worked to grow and modernize the MDRD at GRH. I have also established and led a pilot project partnering GRH with the Region of Waterloo and the Medical Device Reprocessing Association of Ontario (MDRAO) to remove barriers for new comers to Canada to enroll in the MDR course. I also participate in many corporate initiatives. In March 2020 I was part of the team tasked with establishing the screening program at GRH to support the hospital during the pandemic. I was the 1st Manager of the program (in addition to my role as MDR Manager) and helped build a team of over 100 screeners. In December 2020 I was seconded to lead the covid-19 vaccine roll out through Grand River Hospital. The roll out then evolved in to leading the largest mass immunization clinic in Waterloo Region (the Pinebush Vaccine Clinic). The work of the vaccine clinic grew to include outreach via vaccine busses. My team would travel to underserved communities to provide vaccinations. We also supported refugee pop up clinics, pop ups to support our shelter services, drive through vaccinations as well as vaccine event weekends. I am currently managing the Grand River Hospital Regional Covid Care Clinic (RCCC), we provide covid-19 testing, assessment and treatment for the community.
